Behind the Levity

Occasional musings on performing comedy in Vermont, and running a comedy club.

Comedy in Vermont vs. NYC

Before arriving in Vermont, I lived in New York City, where I performed stand-up comedy.  In running a comedy club, I've had a lot of opportunities to think about how stand-up comedy worked in New York, which has influenced how I run Levity, Vermont's only comedy club.  A lot of my decisions draw from one key observation about performing comedy in Vermont and New York:  It is very difficult to get stage time.

When you're starting out as a comic, what you really want is stage-time.  That's the holy grail.  It's your chance to work on your material, perform it in front of an audience, and see what works and what doesn't.  In New York, I was able to identify 4 ways to get stage-time:

Hosting Shows at Levity

One of our main goals at Levity is to give comedians more opportunities to improve their craft, and a key skill is hosting is a show.  Right now we have two hosting opportunities every week: the Thursday Open Mic and the Friday Night Showcase.  Soon well be adding a third chance: the Saturday Night Show.  Having hosted a few shows, I can say that it is not as easy as it looks, but it feels really great and stretches comedy muscles I didn't even know I have.

One of Vermont's more experienced MCs, Colin Ryan, wrote a post recently on his blog, A Stand Up Life, on what he has learned from hosting open mics:

Big Things Coming At Levity

Levity has now been open almost 3 months, and as the year draws to a close it's a good time to think about how we're doing.

We decided to open a comedy club in Burlington because the comedy scene had finally reached a stage where there were enough talented comedians to support weekly shows.  But the big question was, if we start doing comedy every week, will the audiences show up?

The answer is now obvious: Yes!
